10 am3 Types of Design Systems
Jamie Bourne Design systems have been a popular topic for many years and despite the abundance of information there is still confusion about what they are and how they are used. Part of the reason for the confusion is that there are 3 types of design systems that exist: internal, website, and product. In this session we will start with a design system recap and then go on to identify similarities, differences, and share examples for each type of design system to clear up some of the confusion. The Magic of Mobile WebAR Jordan Higgins
Using nothing but a smartphone’s web browser and camera, imagine scanning any everyday US quarter and almost instantly a hologram of George Washington magically appears to challenge you in a game of trivia. This was a recent challenge for U.Group with one of our government customers, and unlike most magicians in this talk we will reveal exactly how we did it. Topics include the secret of detecting a quarter using deep learning, designing and testing a mobile AR game, and the challenges of bringing spatial augmented reality experiences into the real world. @jhiggins |
11 amTrauma-Informed Design
Glennette Clark and Rachael Dietkus, LCSW Although we may not know it, designers frequently encounter individuals with a history of trauma. Trauma-informed design practices simply acknowledge the prevalence of early adversity in the lives of individuals, view potential problems as ways of coping, and understand how trauma shapes an individual’s fundamental beliefs about the world and how trauma might affect their functioning throughout their life This understanding shifts and deepens the designer’s role in working with individuals by including meaningful adaptations to current design methods and evolving our work to create new ones. @glennette @rdietkus Design Adventures: Lessons Learned in 2020

12 pmEffective Data Stories Through Dashboards
Karl Kaufmann Data Dashboards are often sold on the “wow factor,” but is it really serving users’ needs? There are effective methods for doing this that meet their needs by telling effective data stories. @karolus Voice First Product Management - Ask Me About My Experience!
Samantha Bartley I want to share the things I learned working in voice technology and a voice-first product for AARP Foundation! I'm more of a QA type person. I don't do well with speeches and presentations, but I love discussing my experiences and learning what others may/may not know or are interested in! Transitioning from the private sector to the public sector
Dana Chisnell It's weird in there! Going from working for a profit-driven company to working in government can be... challenging. Come to this conversation to talk about your experiences. What was it like? What helped? What took a long time to figure out? @danachis You’re Killing Your Users! (Not Hyperbole)
Jennifer Strickland Design & development decisions have very real consequences for people using your site/app. Using real world examples, paired with current data, you can learn how to be a real lifesaver! In this talk, you’ll understand how decisions can enhance lives, not hurt them. “Edge cases” are real people, and tech decisions have very real consequences. Meet some people impacted, understand the data, and learn techniques to improve lives, not harm them. Using current web performance and accessibility metrics and techniques, this talk outlines a test-driven design process to validate your design, optimize the experience. @jenstrickland |
